Over the years Book Relief UK has supported literacy both home and abroad. Much of this is local to North Devon. Over the past three years we have provided more than £22,000 in grants.
We aim to give 75% of our annual grants to local libraries and schools. We mostly support libraries with school holiday literacy activities. We support schools with a range of literacy initiatives, including funding for school libraries. We also support hospitals, nursery schools and mental health organizations with their literacy projects.
We also support adult literacy initiatives. For example, Read Easy in North Devon, an outreach charity seeking to promote adult literacy. We have donated £1400 to them in the last two years. We also help support The Shannon Trust which directs literacy projects at prisoners in particular. In recent years we were able to donate £1000 and will do so again this year.
We have given £3500 to three overseas charities in the last two years: Books 2 Africa, Empower the Gambia, which maintains a number of school libraries in that country, and a strong local literacy initiative in Uganda empowering working women called Sustain me.
We have also worked with Bideford food banks, giving free books to families who use the banks.
